How to Install LED Lights in your Car

Most people assume installing LED lights inside a car means drilling holes, running wires through the dashboard, and watching a two-hour tutorial. That was true five years ago. It's not anymore.

Modern LED interior lighting kits — the good ones, anyway — use strong adhesive backing and plug directly into your car's USB port. No tools, no wiring, no experience required. If you can peel a sticker and plug in a charger, you can do this. Here's exactly how.

Total Time 10 min
Difficulty Beginner
Tools Needed None
Wiring None

What You'll Need

  • The NightShift LED Interior Car Lighting Kit (4 strips, controller & USB cable included)
  • A clean cloth or paper towel
  • Rubbing alcohol (optional but highly recommended)
  • 10 minutes

Step-by-Step Installation

1
Clean Your Surfaces

This step gets skipped constantly — and it's why strips fall off. Dust, skin oil, and interior residue all prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.

Wipe each surface with a dry cloth first. Follow up with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely (30 seconds). Do this right and you'll never have to redo the installation.

⚡ Pro tip: skip this step and even the best adhesive will eventually lift.
2
Plan Your Layout First

Hold each strip in position before peeling the backing. The four strips in the NightShift Kit are designed for all four footwells — but they're flexible enough to go anywhere you want a glow.

Popular placements:

  • Along the base of the front seats (lights up the floor)
  • Under the dashboard edge (ambient glow upward)
  • Under the rear seats, facing forward
3
Peel and Press

Peel about 5cm of the backing and start at one end. Press firmly as you go, peeling more backing gradually. Don't remove the full backing first — you'll end up with a strip stuck to itself.

Once placed, press along the full length with your thumb for 10–15 seconds. Pay extra attention to the ends — that's where strips start to lift first.

4
Connect to the Controller

Each strip's connector plugs into the controller box — keyed so they only go in one way. Tuck the controller somewhere out of sight: under the center console, behind the dash trim, or velcro'd to the underside of the seat.

5
Plug Into USB

Run the USB-A cable from the controller to any USB port in your car. The kit draws 5W — less than most phone chargers. As soon as power is detected, the lights come on. If all four strips light up, the hardware is done.

6
Download the App and Pair

Search for the NightShift app on the App Store or Google Play. Open it, enable Bluetooth, tap Connect. Pairing takes about 10 seconds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Watch Out For
  • Installing on a cold car — adhesive bonds best at room temperature. If your car's been in freezing temps, let it warm up for 15 minutes first.
  • Folding strips at sharp angles — gentle curves are fine, 90-degree creases can damage the LEDs inside. Find a different routing path instead.
  • Routing cables over hinge points — door sills are a common trap. Make sure no cable crosses a pivot point where it could get cut over time.

Total time from box to fully installed, paired, and driving: under 10 minutes for most cars. There's no version of this that requires a professional, and no car it won't fit in.
